Job Summary
Are you passionate about safety, compliance, and helping others succeed? The City of Mississauga is seeking a motivated and skilled Training Officer, Vehicle & Equipment to lead the development and delivery of training programs that keep our municipal fleet operating safely and efficiently.
In this role, you will administer driver training, conduct evaluations, manage records, and support collision investigations, all while ensuring compliance with the City’s Fleet Management Policy, Ministry of Transportation (MTO) regulations, and other applicable legislation.
Duties and Responsibilities
As the Training Officer, Vehicle & Equipment, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and compliant operation of the City’s diverse fleet. Your key responsibilities will include:
Learning & Development
• Develop vehicle and equipment related technical training, including curriculum and relevant training materials
• Deliver all in-house training programs to new and existing City employees in the safe and efficient operation of City fleet vehicles and equipment
• Manage and lead training, testing, and evaluation of drivers/operators in the use of corporate fleet vehicles in a diverse municipal fleet environment.
• Train new and existing City employees within a classroom environment, on-road evaluations and through one-on-one feedback opportunities
Monitoring Operations & Compliance
• Ensure compliance with Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Regulations and maintain Signing Authority designation
• Monitor the City’s Commercial Vehicle Operator Record (CVOR) safety rating and generate reports to management
• Maintain a working knowledge of legislation, MTO policies and industry standards, including staying abreast of proposed or introduced changes as they apply to the operation or training of vehicles and equipment
• Represent Fleet Services as a member of the Corporate Collision Review Committee and fulfil the requirements of the committee
• Act as a subject matter expert on corporate fleet training and operations, including responding to questions from employees, providing expertise as needed and investigating concerns and issues related to driving practices, driver performance I behaviour and legislative driving requirements
• Investigate driving related complaints regarding operator driving behaviour, and provide recommendation to the appropriate user group
• Participate in the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee
Tracking & Record Keeping
• Ensure all documentation related to employee training and driving records is maintained and accessible, in accordance with the requirements of the MTO, City of Mississauga Corporate policies and Fleet Services requirements
Skills and Qualifications
• Post-secondary education in transportation, safety, or a related field, preferred but not always required.
• Knowledge of CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operator Record) certification.
• Must have, or be able to obtain, Signing Authority status from the MTO.
• Background in training, fleet management, transportation compliance, or operational safety.
• Proficiency in reporting tools, fleet management software, and regulatory documentation.
• A valid commercial driver’s license, such as Ontario DZ or AZ class, may be required.
• Strong verbal and written communication for training, reporting, and advising employees.
• Extensive knowledge of operating diverse fleet vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently.
• Familiarity with Ministry of Transportation (MTO) regulations, fleet policies, and industry standards.
• Ability to analyze driving behavior, investigate incidents, and make recommendations.
• Managing training programs, monitoring operations, and maintaining accurate records.
• Assessing vehicle and driver performance data and interpreting compliance standards.
• Engaging with employees, providing constructive feedback, and participating in safety committees.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 78,602.00 - $ 104,806.00
Hours of Work: 40
Work Location: Mavis Yard: Common Building - 3185 Mavis Road, Mississauga
Work Model : This position is based on a full-time, in-office work model (5 days per week)
