Job Summary

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Traffic Signals, the successful candidate will perform tasks related to a variety of traffic signal programs and traffic signal complaints to ensure the safe and efficient operation of traffic control signals within the City of Mississauga.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Traffic Signal Contract Coordinator in all aspects of contract administration including estimating, contract preparation, contract coordination, payments, recoveries and general records.
  • Assist in the coordination of traffic signal construction activities with contractors and inspectors as required.
  • Prepare PHM-125 legal drawings for review by senior staff to ensure they adhere to legal requirements and are in conformance with traffic engineering practices.
  • Respond to complaints and inquiries related to traffic signals.
  • Provide guidance to technical and inspection staff.
  • Prepare technical and corporate reports.
  • Performing other duties as assigned or required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Traffic Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Certification with OACETT as a Certified Engineering Technologist or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 years related experience in municipal Traffic Engineering practices involving traffic signals and systems.
  • Solid contract management skills to assist in the administration and coordination of contracts including estimating, contract preparation, contract supervision, payments, recoveries and general records.
  • Strong working knowledge of Traffic Signals, including engineering and design, operations and maintenance,and associated sub-systems (i.e. IP Communications; Intelligent Transportation Systems; Fire Pre-emption;etc.).
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable Acts, By-laws, regulations and standards, including Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Ontario Traffic Manuals, International Municipal Signal Association Standards, etc.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential to provide functional guidance to technical and inspection staff.
  • Understanding of basic financial and budget monitoring functions including demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills with the ability to determine an effective course of action.
  • Solid interpersonal and communication abilities to deal effectively with staff, elected officials, contractors, external agencies and the public.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to coordinate multiple competing tasks.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with the flexibility to adapt to the team’s priorities.
  • Strong MicroStation/CAD skills to prepare the yearly traffic signal designs is an asset.
  • Computer proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office, and Infor Public Sector Application Software is an asset.
  • A strong understanding of capital and operational public work programs and initiatives is an asset.
  • Valid Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle for site visits.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $76,313.00 - $101,753.00
