Job Summary

 

As a Traffic II, you will be required to perform a variety of tasks at various work sites operating a scissor lift vehicle, servicing parking meter machines, operating hydro excavating equipment, or assisting in the manufacturing of a variety of signs.  

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Under the supervision of the Supervisor, Signs and Pavement Markings and their Assistant, the successful candidate performs a variety of duties including: 

 

  • Operates City owned vehicles and machinery as required e.g. scissor lift vehicle; paint machines etc. for City's programs in accordance with City Operations and safety policies.
  • Performs Lead Hand duties when assigned.
  • Fills out and completes Work Orders assigned and utilizes traffic sign inventory software.
  • Co-operates with the City and responds to emergency call-ins (example: oversized street name sign maintenance, parking meter service calls).
  • Works safely in accordance to all City's policies and procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Ensures compliance to legislative requirements, collective agreement and City's Policies and Procedures e.g. Respectful Workplace Policy, Workplace Violence Policy, etc.
  • Collects and organizes daily material inventory required to undertake Work Orders.
  • Completes payment collections on parking meters on a scheduled basis.
  • Inspects, tests, maintains, and repairs parking meters – and reports any malfunctioning meters to the Supervisor.
  • Installs and removes parking meters and posts as required.
  • Assist with the fabrication of a variety of signs.
  • Assists with tracking material inventory, and usage.
  • Installs, removes and maintains traffic signs.
  • Removes illegally posted signs from the roadway right of way.
  • Operates roadway pavement marking equipment such as paint machines, cold plastic marking equipment, and pavement marking grinders.
  • Installs and removes speed sensors and trailers.
  • Conducts concrete and asphalt coring for installation of new galvanized steel sleeves.
  • Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Qualified staff may be requested to tow, and operate the City’s hydro vacuum trailer.
  • Capable of operating the scissor lift.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Exposure to variety of weather conditions, noise, vibration, unpleasant smells etc.
Exposure to concrete, asphalt, dust, flying particles etc.
Requires lifting, pulling and carrying of heavy equipment and objects.
Requires operation of a variety of motorized hand tools.  
 

Skills and Qualifications

 

  • Must have successfully completed secondary school.
  • Must have previous experience in operating scissor lift and all other vehicles in the units fleet, paint machines, grinders, hydraulics, and installation of speed sensors and trailers.
  • 3 years minimum experience in relation to traffic sign installation and roadway pavement marking application.
  • Minimum of 1350 hours previous experience in an acting Traffic II capacity required.
  • Working knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act and Ontario Traffic Manual (O.T.M.) with respect to traffic sign installation, pavement marking application and traffic control.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in an effective manner, both verbally and written;
  • Must demonstrate effective leadership skills to be able to act as a Lead Hand.
  • Must demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills along with strong customer service and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team environment, self motivated and cooperative.
  • Must have a valid Ontario Class G driver's license and a clean record; those with a A(R) and/or DZ drivers license will be given preference. A drivers’ abstract will be required to verify a driving record in good standing.
  • Availability and dependability to work shifts and overtime as required.
  • Basic working knowledge of MS office and City’s computer system is an asset.
  • Knowledge of City's policies and procedures is required.
  • Must be able to meet essential physical requirements of this position including lifting, pulling and carrying of heavy objects, working outdoors in all weather conditions, exposure to asphalt, concrete and dust, etc.

  • Knowledge of the content and use of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Technical Standards and Safety Authority and OTM Book 7.
  • To advance to the interview stage, the applicant must achieve a score of 65% or above on a practical assessment.
  • Knowledge of Department’s cash handling policies and procedures. 
  • A Criminal Record Search will be required of the successful candidate.

 

HOURS OF WORK/SHIFT WORK: 


40 hr/week, 7:30am-4:00pm, Monday to Friday
This position requires shift work and the occasional over-time.

Employment offer is conditional upon providing a Criminal Records Search, at your own expense, that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.

Future progression will be governed by clause 13.01 b. of the collective agreement. Another factor considered for progression is satisfactory job performance including, acceptable attendance record, driving record in good standing, availability for over time hours, and demonstrated potential for performing lead hand responsibilities as outlined.
