Job Summary

 

MiWay is seeking experienced and motivated leaders to supervise the day to day maintenance of transit buses and non revenue fleet vehicles.

 

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Transit Maintenance, the Supervisor is responsible for leading skilled trades staff in a unionized, safety critical environment to ensure vehicles are safe, compliant, and ready for service. This position plays a key role in supporting daily service delivery, fleet availability, and MiWay’s commitment to safety, reliability, and customer service.

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Under the direction of the Assistant Manager, Transit Maintenance, the successful candidate will:

 

  • Supervise the day to day activities of Transit Maintenance staff to ensure the safe, efficient, and timely inspection, repair, cleaning, and servicing of transit buses and non revenue fleet vehicles.
  • Assign work, allocate personnel and equipment, and adjust priorities to support daily fleet availability and service requirements.
  • Schedule maintenance activities and prepare work orders using a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Ensure all maintenance work complies with Ministry of Transportation legislation, applicable safety regulations, manufacturer specifications, and MiWay policies and procedures.
  • Provide front line leadership by setting clear performance expectations, monitoring work quality, and supporting staff through coaching and feedback.
  • Manage staffing requirements, attendance, overtime, and shift coverage in accordance with operational needs and collective agreements.
  • Work collaboratively with management, Human Resources, and union representatives to address employee relations matters and support effective labour relations.
  • Respond to service impacting failures, road calls, incidents, and urgent maintenance issues as required.
  • Ensure staff are properly instructed in safe work practices, approved methods, procedures, and performance standards.
  • Support the onboarding, orientation, and ongoing development of MiWay  Maintenance staff.
  • Support and, when required, supervise the operation of bus wash area, fueling stations, and bus cleaning activities.
  • Monitor and manage records including absences, overtime, incident reports, and operational data.
  • Assist with identifying warranty issues, tagging defective components, and ensuring warranty claims and supplier commitments are upheld.
  • Ensure tools, parts, materials, and cores are properly handled, stored, returned, or disposed of in accordance with procedures.
  • Conduct technical investigations, inspections, and procedural or quality audits as required.
  • Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive workplace that is free from harassment and discrimination.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

 

  • Minimum grade 12 education required.
  • Must hold a valid 310T Truck and Coach Technician Certificate of Qualification, issued and maintained in good standing with Skilled Trades Ontario.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Journeyperson following attainment of trade certification, with exposure to the full range of transit bus maintenance activities or an equivalent combination of education / certifications and experience.
  • Three (3) years of progressive experience demonstrating leadership responsibility, including supervision or acting supervisory duties is preferred.
  • A valid 310S Automotive Service Technician Certificate of Qualification, issued by Skilled Trades Ontario, is considered an asset.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence with an acceptable driving abstract; a Class C licence with Z endorsement is preferred.
  • Ability to work various shifts including days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays.
  • Strong working knowledge of heavy vehicle maintenance, diagnostics, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Knowledge of shop management practices, preventative maintenance programs, and applicable OHSA, MTO, MOL, and MOE legislative requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and support employees in a unionized environment, with a focus on safety, collaboration, consistency, and respectful workplace practices.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience or exposure to battery electric buses or alternative propulsion technologies is considered an asset.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 91,701.00 - $ 122,268.00
