Supervisor, Energy

Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Energy Management the successful candidate will be responsible to effectively plan and manage a team of professionals in the development and implementation of energy management programs in relation to all City-owned buildings and facilities.

Due to Covid-19, most of our offices are currently closed to protect the health and safety of our employees, clients and community. As such, this position will be required to work remotely for an undetermined period. Once our offices re-open you will report to 950 Burhamthorpe Rd W, Mississauga.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Manager Energy Management in the development and implementation of the Corporate energy strategy
  • Determine energy conservation opportunities in the City’s portfolio of facilities to reduce the City’s annual utility spending budget. Prepare business cases showing cost and savings analysis. Develop and oversee the implementation of energy efficiency programs, perform M&V to measure the project results
  • Liaise with operating and asset management staff to coordinate end-of-life-cycle equipment replacement with energy efficient upgrades
  • Oversee the incentives management program coordinating the application process with project managers and utility companies
  • Provide project management and supervision of construction for energy conservation projects, including preparation of contract documents, construction supervision and financial control. 
  • Ensure that all construction projects within the energy management program are scheduled and completed on time and within budget 
  • Establish preliminary and final budgets for energy efficiency projects; establish priority of conservation measures, design criteria for major projects; guidance or field supervision to full-time team as well as ongoing part-time staff such as coop students; creating an environment of teamwork and foster cooperative group effort
  • Perform project validation
  • Supervise staff including development of PMP agreements and evaluation of work performance.
  • Work with staff to identify career goals and development needs, and provide regular feedback 
  • Provide ongoing coaching and mentoring to support individual and team performance
  • Responsible for the recruitment of staff
  • Leads the update of the Energy Efficiency Guidelines 
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of post secondary education is required.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer  (mechanical) with Professional Engineers of Ontario is preferred.
  • Over 5 years proven successful and progressive experience in mechanical engineering, design and construction administration is required.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills
  • Minimum 5 years experience in energy conservations,
  • PMP and LEED designations are preferred.
  • Experience in managing consultants/contractors
  • Minimum of 3 years leadership and/or supervisory experience;
  • Minimum of 5 years project management experience;
  • Excellent demonstrated understanding financial analysis and economic justification of energy efficiency retrofit projects
  • Detail oriented and exceptional planning and organizational skills for managing multiple tasks
  • Strong public relations skills to build partnerships and collaborative relationships with people both inside and outside the organization
  • Excellent computer skills in MS Word, Excel, MS Project.  Working knowledge of energy/ utility/accounting systems
  • Strong negotiation skills. 
  • Excellent time management skills in managing workload and work schedules. 
  • Solid background in preparing and administering consulting and construction agreements. 
  • Accounting and/or budgeting experience. 
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written business analysis and consultation skills 


Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 80,638.00 - $ 107,518.00
