Job Summary
Responsible for planning, developing, implementing, maintaining and monitoring aquatic programs, services and staff to meet strict safety requirements and the diverse needs of the community.
Reporting to the Manager, Aquatics, the successful candidate will develop and operate a comprehensive aquatic program to meet the needs of the community within the approved operating budget and with a sincere regard for safety.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure a safe aquatic environment for the public and staff in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Hire, train, supervise and develop part time staff and full-time staff.
- Develop innovative programming to meet the needs of diverse population.
- Conduct audits to ensure compliance to standards.
- Liaise with community groups, schools and hospitals.
- Propose, establish and operate comprehensive Aquatic Programs and special events in cooperation with the facility team.
- Encourage community involvement from a programming perspective and in the use of the facility.
- Continuously analyze and modify existing programs.
- Provide timely and effective resolution of customer complaints that meets the customers' expectations using solid judgement, decision making and effective communication skills.
- Respond to the needs of community-based swim clubs and pool rental customers.
- Provide leadership to outdoor pool or satellite operations (where applicable).
- Monitor, prepare and approve part-time and full-time payroll and provide reports as needed.
- Participate as part of the building supervisory team and assist in the general supervision of the building, programs and staff.
- Prepare for, respond to and follow-up on accidents and incidents in the facility.
- Monitor budget areas and provides recommendations for budget forecasts.
- Ensure a high standard of facility cleanliness.
- Participate in business unit, divisional and departmental work and project teams.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Note: Must be available to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as required for program supervision and building coverage. The successful candidate will need to be prepared for increased mobility, with appropriate notice, in order to fill vacancies, provide developmental opportunities for staff and be responsive to future operational needs or to support the operational structure and its requirements.
Skills and Qualifications
- Degree or Diploma in Recreation or related field along with a minimum of three (3) years recreation experience in an aquatic setting.
- Minimum five (5) years of supervisory experience at a progressive level.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and demonstrate excellent customer service.
- Must be a highly motivated self-starter with excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Display an ability to work in a changing team environment and also possess a genuine interest in broaden in your experience.
- Position requires successful candidate to travel between various locations within the city, as required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications and ActiveNet required. Knowledge of SAP a definite asset.
- Required Certifications include: Standard First Aid/CPR-C from one of the following agencies: Lifesaving Society, Red Cross, St. John Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol; National Lifeguard Award; Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor certifications; HIGH FIVE® - (PHCD) Principles of Healthy Child Development and Quest 2; Aquatic Supervisory Training or Aquatic Management Training.
- Preferred Certifications include: NL Instructor, and Lifesaving Society First Aid Instructor, Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainer, Bronze Cross Examiner and Lifesaving Society Advanced Instructor certifications; Professional accreditation and or training in aquatic fitness and aquatic post rehabilitation, older adult programming or related services, development and delivery of general recreation programming; Certified Pool Operator. Aquatic Safety Inspector.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $91,701.00 - $122,268.00
