Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Animal Services, the Supervisor, Animal Field Services & Enforcement represents a key leadership role at Animal Services to supervise a team of Municipal Law Enforcement Officers that are committed to collaboration and delivery on our commitments to residents, visitors and businesses in Mississauga, with a focus on matters of responsible pet ownership, community safety, animal welfare and the Animal Care and Control By-law 0098-04 in a 24/7 continuous operation. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and leadership to the field services enforcement team with focus on our mandate of excellence in customer service, education and animal care.
  • Manage the performance of Field Services Officers.
  • Subject matter expert to provide clarity and guidance to staff on Standard Operating Procedures, and provide recommendations to management for the revision or addition of procedures.
  • Assign tasks and set priorities for officers, approve time-off, and time and labour.
  • Field staff concerns or grievances in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Review officer daily run-sheets and pre-shift vehicle safety checks.
  • Communicate with staff on a routine basis to ensure consistent messaging to meet the needs of the business.
  • Approve and manage the schedule in accordance with the collective agreement, with a focus on providing optimal service levels and balancing budgetary constraints.
  • Address and resolve resident and councillor concerns through various mediums.
  • Perform field ride-outs with staff as time permits.

  • Advise Manager of day to day operations in the field to ensure enforcement and services are consistently and appropriately applied through City and Provincial standards.
  • Manage the recruitment, onboarding and training of new staff.
  • Foster an environment of health, safety and wellness and ensure that all incidents are investigated and documented as per policy.
  • Ensure that documentation required for court is complete and submitted in a timely manner; handle appropriate Administrative Penalty screening appointment evidence provision.
  • Field staff concerns or grievances in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Serve as back-up to other Supervisors - share and balance duties as required.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays (24 - 7 operation) to support and manage performance across the schedule.  40 hour work week

Skills and Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree is strongly preferred, with preference for Law, Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or related field from a recognized institution. 
  • Graduate of a recognized enforcement-related, wildlife and or animal care program, or have combination of relevant education and experience.
  • 5-6 years of Animal Services enforcement, law enforcement or by-law enforcement experience.
  • Previous animal handling experience and knowledge of wildlife and domestic animal disease, risks, habits and habitats preferred.
  • 2-3 years of supervisory experience is preferred, ideally in a unionized environment.
  • Strongly customer-centric with a demonstrated ability to communicate and deal effectively with the public, external agencies, elected officials, and City staff.
  • Experience and solid competency in business writing, which may include the development of educational materials, standard operating procedures, corporate reports, project charters and internal and external communications.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral & written) with proven success in resolving disputes through tact and diplomacy.
  • A proven self-starter that uses sound judgement in the decision-making process with a focus on meeting the needs of the business

Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 86,858.00 - $ 115,812.00
