Job Summary

We are seeking a collaborative and equity-focused Active Transportation Assistant to support the development of safe, connected, and accessible walking, cycling, and rolling infrastructure.
As part of the Active Transportation team, you will help design and implement projects that enhance mobility options for residents of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. This includes supporting the annual expansion of the cycling network and improvements to the sidewalk network, with a strong emphasis on accessibility, community engagement, and safety.

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Manager, Active Transportation, with functional guidance from the Active Transportation Coordinator, the successful candidate will perform the following:
• Prepare work orders for spot improvements as required;
• Assist with the engineering design and implementation of bicycle lanes, multi-use trails, signed bicycle routes and other new active transportation facilities;
• Assist in the development of public engagement plans and strategies for major projects;
• Undertake detailed reviews of identified active transportation facilities and provide recommendations to members of staff;
• Investigate and complete inventory requirements related to bike parking, signage, and pavement marking needs;
• Provide both written and verbal feedback to staff and the general public related to active transportation design and operations; and
• Perform other duties as required.
Duties and responsibilities may vary according to the student’s academic background and experience.
Skills and Qualifications
• Must be enrolled in a post-secondary degree program or engineering technology diploma in civil engineering, transportation engineering, planning or a related discipline;
• Demonstrate knowledge of cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, design requirements, and best practices;
• Knowledge in traffic engineering theory and practice would be an asset;
• Interest in public engagement would be an asset;
• Experience with computer applications such as Adobe Suite, Traffic Engineering Software (TES), MS Office, Outlook, and other related software;
• Exceptional customer service skills;
• Strong verbal and written communication skill are essential;
• Demonstrated ability to plan and organize work is crucial;
• Must be comfortable traveling to multiple locations, and able to provide own transportation (use of personal vehicle will be compensated at an established per km rate); and
• Being comfortable riding a bicycle would be an asset.
Hourly Rate/Salary: 19.80 - 23.53
Hours of Work: 35 hours
