Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Client Computing & Mobility, the Communications Specialist is responsible for the support, administration, and continuous improvement of the City’s radio communications systems and mobile device services. This role maintains a balanced portfolio, with responsibilities equally shared across both radio and mobile environments.

The position supports critical City operations—including Transit, Security, Enforcement, and Emergency Services—by ensuring the reliability, security, and effectiveness of communication technologies. The Communications Specialist works across both domains, recognizing the shared accountability to deliver consistent service, operational readiness, and technology improvements across the organization.

The role operates in a hybrid work environment, with office presence required at Mississauga City Hall, 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Managing, configuring, and supporting P25 radio systems operating on the Peel Region VCOM network, including monitoring system performance, troubleshooting issues, and coordinating upgrades
  • Supporting enterprise mobile devices (iOS and Android), including configuration, deployment, and ongoing support of mobile services and applications
  • Administering mobile device management (MDM) systems and ensuring secure access to corporate resources such as email, VPN, and business applications
  • Maintaining inventory, lifecycle management, and documentation for both radio and mobile assets
  • Providing technical support to end-users across the organization, both remotely and on-site, for communication-related technologies
  • Delivering user guidance and training on radio and mobile device usage and best practices
  • Participating in after-hours support, as required, for critical operational needs
  • Represent the City in external partner meetings (e.g., VCOM) and manage associated invoicing, reporting, and coordination activities
  • Manage vendor relationships, including telecommunications providers and equipment suppliers, ensuring service delivery expectations are met
  • Support procurement processes, including RFQs/RFPs, and administer associated contracts and service agreements
  • Contribute to or lead communication-related projects, including system upgrades, deployments, and enhancements
  • Provide subject matter expertise and recommendations to business units on communication technologies, solutions, and cost considerations
  • Develop and maintain documentation, standard operating procedures, and implementation plans to support both service areas

Skills and Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, or a related field
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in an information technology or communications technology role
  • Demonstrated experience supporting radio communication systems and/or enterprise mobile device environments, with a strong willingness to work across both areas
  • In-depth knowledge of P25 Radio systems, LMR, Mobile Radio solutions, carrier grade PTT solutions, Radio frequencies/spectrum and Telecommunications
  • Experience with mobile platforms (iOS and Android) and mobile device management solutions (Microsoft Intune)
  • Familiarity with corporate IT environments, including Active Directory and enterprise device management tools
  • Understanding of IT service management principles (e.g., ITIL)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Proven ability to manage vendors, contracts, and procurement activities
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Ability to work collaboratively and support shared service delivery across multiple technology domains

Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 91,701.00 - $ 122,268.00
