Job Summary

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Community Programs, the successful candidate will be responsible for organizing and delivering a comprehensive Skating program to meet the needs of all participants registered in the program and provide supervision and leadership to Skating Instructors and volunteers.

Please note: Due to the uncertainty we are facing regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and the City's programming restrictions, the recruitment of these positions is dependent on available vacancies and business needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach basic to advanced skills through group lessons of 3 to 10 participants.
  • Organize, plan and implement the activities at the start and end of each program (warm up and cool downs) and prepare weekly lesson plans.
  • Ensure the continuing safety of all participants during all activities.
  • Ensure program plans meet Course Objectives and HIGH FIVE Principles and Design Guidelines.
  • Supervise, provide guidance and evaluations for Skating Instructors during lesson blocks.
  • Review lesson plans on weekly basis/as requested to ensure staff are planning and executing appropriate instruction.
  • Provide quality customer service to parents and participants on an ongoing basis and deal with customer complaints regarding instructor classes or pass/fails in class.
  • Deal with participants/parents when inappropriate skates or safety equipment (i.e. not having a CSA approved helmet thereby restricting their participation).
  • Ensure that all participants are properly registered and record attendance daily for each class.
  • Order, distrubute and complete progress cards for each student in a testable program.
  • Ensure that equipment is safe and in good repair and responsible for locking equipment up at the end of each program day.t Head pro with supervision and instruction of participants during the warmup and cool down portions of each program. Ensure the continuing safety of all participants during warmup and cool down portions of the program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Figure skating, Hockey or Recreation Skating Program experience.
  • Knowledge to teach and ability to perform the skills in the City of Mississauga Skating Program or equivalent combination of skill and experiennce in a related sport (i.e. hockey, ringette, etc.).
  • A valid Emergency First Aid & CPR B certification (Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John's Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol.
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Health Child Development or HIGH FIVE® Sport certification.
  • Minimum two sessions instructing with the City of Mississauga Skating Program.
  • Previous supervisory experience is an asset.
  • Past evaluations must be exceeding expectations level of performance.
  • Employment offer is conditional upon receipt of a Level III - Vulnerable Sector Check from a Police Unit that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga.
