Referee, Adult Sport Leagues - Soccer (Sportsplex)

Job Summary

Knowledgeable and familiar with the playing rules of the specified sport required and possess strong communication and organizational skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Program Supervisor and League Convenor, the successful candidate will be responsible to officiate, demonstrate game management, effectively communicate with other officials and league convenor and complete necessary documentation related to league games.

  • To support the objectives and philosophies of the Adult league programs as established by the Recreation Department through quality customer service and cooperative staff relations.
  • Demonstrated experience dealing with the public in a position which requires excellence in problem-solving, conflict resolution and independence.
  • Remain attentive to detail, stay focused and concentrated for each shift/ game, to ensure supervision of players and provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants by adhering to department Safety standards and Program Standards.
  • To implement and enforce league standards, policies and rules consistently while officiating games. Maintain orderliness in the league environment by effectively diffusing difficult situations
  • To accurately and on time, complete all related administrative tasks. (Game scores, defaults, suspensions, accident reports, attendance.)
  • To conduct safety checks of program equipment and allocated facilities. Clean up and store equipment properly after use.
  • To report all discipline issues and suspensions to the League Convener and Program Supervisor. Communicate effectively through written and verbal communication including; generating accident/incident reports, e-mails, and sport specific documentation regarding league discipline. Participate in discipline hearings as required.
  • Prevent & respond to urgent and potentially volatile situations. Identifying hazardous situations which could jeopardize the safety of persons on site; assisting the public and staff in resolving situations by offering advice and guidance. To effectively and in a timely manner communicate any issues/ information that could impact the quality and safe delivery of the program to the MOD or direct supervisor.
  • Recommend and initiate the removal of unauthorized or unruly persons from league play or the facilities our leagues operate out of.
  • Perform emergency first aid services to public and staff as necessary
  • To attend all mandatory staff meetings and training as required.
  • To complete all mandatory online, e- learning training modules.
  • To read, understand and abide by all City Divisional Standards, Corporate Policies and Procedures, including the Human Resources policies, Respectful Employee Conduct, Health and Safety and Freedom of Information Act.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and split shifts
  • To perform other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
  • The successful candidate must be knowledgeable and familiar with the playing rules of the specified sport required, have strong communication and organizational skills
  • Hold a valid Emergency First Aid / CPR “B” certificate (Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross Society, St. John’s Ambulance or the Canadian Ski Patrol).
  • Referee’s certification in the specific sport is an asset.
  • Candidate must have 3-5 years of officiating, administration or playing experience in an Adult Sport League environment.
  • A Criminal Record Search will be required of the successful candidate, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted. 


Hourly Rate/Salary: $29.43 - $39.22 
Hours of Work: Part-Time 
Work Location: Paramount Fine Foods Centre - Fieldhouse
