Job Summary
The main objective of the Summer Collections Assistant position is to assist with conducting an artifact inventory of the Benares Outbuildings and storage areas. This requires physically checking each artifact, creating new barcode labels, taking photographs as needed, and updating our PastPerfect database. As well, 75-100 condition reports on random artifacts from the collection will be created and entered into our database. The final objective would be to research appraisal values and conservation treatments for selected artifacts.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Collections Coordinator, the Summer Collections Assistant will:
- Work as part of a team to complete an artifact inventory of the storage at Benares Historic House as well as create 75 condition reports.
- Using PastPerfect database, tasks will also include data entry, historical research, scanning and/or taking digital images, and barcoding.
- Assist with research of current market value and conservation treatments on selected artifacts.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- Must be a student working towards or planning to pursue a Museum degree with a background in museum studies, history, or archival studies.
- Working knowledge of PastPerfect would be an asset.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent data entry, research, and computer skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Solid knowledge of Canadian History would be an asset.
- Familiarity with Mississauga history would be an asset.
- Access to a vehicle is an asset.
The successful candidate must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada.
Note: Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible. - Be legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number).
- Be between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment.
- Be a high school, college, CEGEP or university student.
- Be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory.
- Intend to return to studies during or after the YCW work assignment.
- Be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment.
- Not have another full-time job during the YCW assignment.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $20.29 - $24.11
Hours of Work: Up to 35
