Job Summary


Review mechanical engineering design drawings and associated documents for compliance with the Ontario Building Code Act, the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and all other applicable legislation. Attend meetings and communicate with design professionals regarding mechanical engineering design proposals. Maintain divisional building records.

Duties and Responsibilities


Reporting to the Supervisor of Mechanical Plan Examination, the successful candidate will perform the following duties: 

  • Process building permit applications, including the review of drawings and documents, to ensure that the proposed mechanical systems comply with the Building Code Act, the Ontario Building Code, and any other applicable law.
  • Review mechanical system designs for all building types and uses with respect to plumbing, heating, ventilation, and resource conservation systems. 
  • Update the electronic plan submission system (e-plans) with information relating to the status of application reviews.
  • Respond to enquiries in a timely manner from customers, designers, contractors, developers, and the general public.
  • Work cooperatively with other City staff and affiliated external agencies.
  • Attend meetings as necessary to facilitate the issuance of building permits.
  • Maintain knowledge development by attending courses and seminars, staying current on industry practices, standards, etc. 
  • Present a professional, courteous and respectful image to the public at all times.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

Skills and Qualifications


  • Certified Engineering Technologist or Professional Engineer with a minimum of 3 to 5 years of directly related work experience in the building construction industry. A Professional Engineering designation is an asset.
  • Qualified and registered building practitioner as required by the Building Code Act, or alternatively, successful completion of the exams and timelines from date of hire, as noted below.
  • Previous engineering consulting or municipal experience is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the requirements of the Building Code Act, Ontario Building Code, design standards, and any other applicable law as they apply to mechanical building systems.
  • Must be proficient in the reading and interpretation of drawings, specifications and other technical documents.
  • Must have strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • Personal computer literacy is required.

Note: If appointed as an Mechanical Plan Examiner, successful completion of Ontario Building Code qualification exams in 'General Legal Process' and 'Plumbing All Buildings' within four (4) months from date of hire, and 'Building Services' within six (6) months from date of hire. Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 72,088.00 - $ 96,120.00
