Manager, Planning

Job Summary

Manage and guide a team of planning staff in the provision of land-use policy planning primarily in localized areas. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, preparation, production and presentation of reports, policies, correspondence, studies, discussion papers, terms of reference, and comments regarding policy planning matters.
  • Interpreting and preparing amendments to the City's Official Plan and zoning by-law.
  • Undertaking community visioning studies and master plans.
  • Consultation with other city divisions such as Development and Design, Infrastructure Planning, Parks and Forestry and Legal Services.
  • Coordination with other agencies such as the Region of Peel, Provincial ministries and school boards. 
  • Undertake consultation with stakeholders and the community.
  • Monitor and report on planning initiatives and best practices of other levels of government and other jurisdictions.
  • Be prepared to defend City policies at Ontario Land Tribunal hearings as required.
  • Recruit, assign work, and manage performance of employees.
  • Approve all reports and material prepared by planners.
  • Manage consultants retained to assist the City with strategic projects.
  • Present at Leadership Team and Council meetings as required.
  • In conjunction with management, develop the work program and budget.  

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Urban Geography or a related discipline. Master’s preferred. 
  • Membership in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute and the Canadian Institute of Planners is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years professional experience. 
  • Strong project management skills is required.
  • Advanced understanding of policy planning principles and practices
  • Ability to engage stakeholders on a variety of planning matters with confidence and professionalism
  • Microsoft Office and applicable software programs.


Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 114,953.00 - $ 153,269.00 
Hours of Work: 35
