Job Summary
The City of Mississauga is seeking an experienced and forward thinking Manager, Equipment Training – Transit to lead the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of technical training across MiWay’s Transit Maintenance workforce. This role plays a key part in preparing our teams for current and emerging technologies, including hybrid, battery electric buses (BEB), hydrogen fuel cell systems (FCEB), and modernization initiatives.
As the steward and overseer of all technical training, SOP development, and apprenticeship programming, you will report to the Senior Manager of Transit Maintenance and ensure our maintenance workforce remains safe, certified, and ready to support a rapidly evolving transit fleet.

Duties and Responsibilities
Training Delivery & Program Management
- Manage maintenance trainers and technical training staff.
- Oversee delivery of all technical training programs, including hybrid, BEB, hydrogen, and regulatory certifications.
- Validate technical competency assessments and sign-off completions.
- Ensure training content meets corporate, regulatory, and safety standards.
Compliance, Certification & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure training programs meet Skilled Trades Ontario, TSSA, CSA, and other regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate training records, certification documentation, and audit readiness.
- Track and analyze training metrics; implement continuous improvement initiatives.
Strategic Leadership & Workforce Planning
- Develop workforce readiness strategies supporting current and future fleet technologies.
- Align training programs with organizational strategy and fleet modernization planning.
- Collaborate across Maintenance, Engineering, and Facilities to prepare staff for new technologies.
SOPs, Work Instructions & Technical Documentation
- Manage technical writer to develop, standardize, and maintain SOPs, job aids, curriculum, and work instructions.
- Ensure materials align with best practices and emerging technological requirements.
Budget & Resource Management
- Accountable to manage the technical training and workforce development budget.
- Identify resource gaps, secure necessary tools, simulators, equipment, and staffing.
- Provide insights and recommendations to senior leadership on training needs and workforce readiness.
Apprenticeship & Mentorship Programs
- Lead all aspects of apprenticeship development, coaching, and exam preparation.
- Oversee competency sign offs for 310T apprentices and technology-specific certifications.
- Coordinate training schedules with operational staffing to minimize disruption.
Skills and Qualifications
Mandatory
- 310T Truck & Coach Technician certification (required to oversee apprenticeship and training programs).
- Minimum of 4 years of experience delivering technical training in a mechanical, automotive, or fleet maintenance environment.
- Experience in:
- Workforce supervision and training development;
- Regulatory compliance (Skilled Trades Ontario, TSSA, CSA);
- Emerging fleet technologies (hybrid, BEB, hydrogen).
Education & Credentials
- Post-secondary education in Business, HR, Engineering, or a related field (asset).
- Adult learning or technical vocational training (asset).
- C.Tech or C.E.T designation (preferred).
Technical & Leadership Skills
- Strong knowledge of vehicle repair processes, technical manuals, and safety regulations.
- Ability to build effective training programs aligned to current and emerging technologies.
- Excellent communication, problem solving, organizational, and documentation skills.
- Experience working in a unionized environment and with collective agreements.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and training data systems.
- Must be able to travel; valid passport required.
Working Conditions
- Primarily office-based, with periodic visits to Transit Maintenance facilities.
- Requires strong mental focus for training design, compliance oversight, and workforce planning.
- Occasional exposure to maintenance shop environments during inspections or training oversight.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 97,831.00 - $ 130,442.00
