Job Summary

A Library Page maintains a library’s organization by sorting, shelving, and shelf-reading returned books, magazines, and other materials in correct alphabetical or numerical order. Pages ensure public areas are tidy, assist with basic circulation tasks, empty drop boxes, and may help with other duties as assigned like displays or special events. This is a part-time role requiring strong attention to detail and some physical ability for lifting, bending, and walking.

 

This posting is for the purpose of obtaining a pool of qualified candidates for Library Page positions at various Library locations. This is not a seasonal position or for temporary work. There is a minimum of 12 work hours required per week, up to 24. Evening and weekend work is required. Jobs will not be offered immediately, and there can be a delay of 1-3 months, or longer, before a vacancy becomes available at applicants’ preferred library locations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sort library materials
  • Shelve library materials
  • Shelf read
  • Perform materials handling routines such as retrieving materials, packing and unpacking boxes, sorting onto trucks, shifting and arranging shelves and emptying the drop box
  • May perform check-in routines. May be asked to perform check-out routines on an emergency basis
  • May assist with preparation of program materials
  • Tidies branch/department and may assist with closing or opening procedures
  • Respond to directional questions or redirects customers appropriately
  • Responsible for contributing to a positive and respectful workplace
  • Other related duties as assigned

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • ​​Effective interpersonal skills in dealing with staff
  • Effective written and oral skills in English are essential
  • Demonstrated keyboarding ability
  • Knowledge of library electronic resources
  • Computer skills are required in relevant software
  • Ability to identify process improvements and efficiencies, and participate in implementation
  • Lifting and pushing are required
  • Sunday work may be required
  • Hours of work to include evenings and Saturdays

 

Please note: This is a bargaining unit position.  CUPE Local 1989 members will be given consideration for this vacancy, as per the collective agreement, followed by all other employees. Prospective applicants should consult article 16.05 of the Collective Agreement under job postings.
