Job Summary

The City of Mississauga is seeking a lawyer to join its Municipal Law Group with a primary focus on providing support to the Chief Information Officer, in addition to other divisions within the City, for all information technology procurements and intellectual property licensing requirements.  As a strong team collaborator, you will have the ability to establish and maintain relationships as you provide legal advice with respect to information technology, intellectual property and commercial law matters.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advising on commercial information technology transactions and procurement processes involving information technology and other commercial law matters.
  • Drafting, negotiating and reviewing a wide range of information technology agreements, procurement documents and commercial agreements.
  • Providing advice on intellectual property matters. 
  • Providing legal opinion and strategic guidance to City staff in relation to the acquisition and successful deployment of technology.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

This is a Solicitor's position in which the successful candidate will be reporting to the Deputy City Solicitor, Municipal Law and working with members of the Legal Services Division. The successful candidate should have:

  1. An LL.B. or equivalent and be a member with the LSO in good standing;
  2. A minimum of 5 years of experience as a practicing lawyer in information technology and procurement;
  3. Knowledge and experience drafting, negotiating, structuring and advising on various types of commercial contracts and transactions relating to all aspects of information technology and procurement;
  4. Experience providing advice on intellectual property law matters;
  5. Excellent communication, drafting, analytical and problem solving skills;
  6. Knowledge of municipal law and privacy legislation is viewed as an asset;
  7. The ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, in a collegial team environment;
  8. Effective time management skills including the ability to multi-task, balance competing priorities and work within tight deadlines; and
  9. The ability to exercise sound judgment in providing legal advice in support of the City’s strategic direction and in negotiating complex agreements.
