The Real Estate Law Clerk conducts and manages real estate transactions; conducts legal research, title searches and analysis; registers by-laws, agreements and title documents; manages assignments and priorities to ensure deadlines are met and files are continuously and consistently moving forward.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Deputy City Solicitor, Planning, Development and Real Estate Law, the successful candidate will provide a full range of support to the lawyers practicing in the areas of real estate law, including:
- Register and/or delete all required instruments from title using Teraview software
- Review lengthy and complex legal agreements and/or documents for accuracy
- Conduct straight-forward and complex title searches with title summaries
- Independently close all real estate transactions in accordance with Agreement of Purchase & Sale terms
- Assist with all steps required to expropriate land in support of City projects
- Prepare, review and submit by-laws and corporate reports
- Prioritize work and exercise good judgement in a fast paced environment
- Contact land registry office if and when required to resolve title issues
- Assist with tax sales conducted under the Municipal Act, 2001
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned
Skills and Qualifications
- College Diploma as Law Clerk and member in good standing with the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario
- 5+ years of experience in commercial real estate law in Ontario
- Detailed knowledge of property surveys, requisitions, agreements including conveyancing and ability to conduct on and off title searches
- Knowledge of applicable legislation, including the Municipal Act, Land Registry Act, Land Titles Act
- Knowledge in both registry and land title systems including demonstrated experience with paper and electronic document registration
- Knowledge of and/or exposure to expropriation law would be an asset
- Excellent analytical and detail oriented skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication that deals courteously and professionally with client groups, team members and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team, take initiative and adhere to deadlines
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Teraview, DocuSign and Westlaw
- Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development
Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 76,313.00 - $ 101,753.00
