Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Urban Design, the successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing and commenting on development applications and capital works projects from a landscape architectural perspective. The role also includes conducting pre‑ and post‑construction inspections to ensure as‑built works conform to approved development plans, municipal by‑laws, and applicable industry standards and procedures.
This position is well suited to a junior–intermediate landscape architect with approximately 1–3 years of professional experience who is looking to further develop technical knowledge and gain exposure to public‑facing municipal work in a fast‑paced environment. With guidance from the Manager and senior staff, the successful candidate will support several projects concurrently, review landscape plans and technical construction documents, complete site inspections, assist in resolving landscape‑related issues, provide input on legal agreements, and deliver professional, customer‑focused communication with consultants, contractors, internal stakeholders, and the public.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager of Urban Design, the successful candidate will:
- Review and provide comments from a landscape architectural perspective on all types of development applications and capital works projects, including but not limited to the review of landscape plans, details and standards, streetscape designs, and associated legal agreements.
- Conduct and document various site inspections to support the development application approvals process, including but not limited to, site inventory, tree preservation hoarding, sign by-law variances, and post-development site inspections.
- Intake, monitor, maintain, and recommend release or reduction to existing development securities on behalf of the Development and Design Division subject to detailed file review and site inspections.
- Participate in inter-departmental projects in a professional and knowledgeable manner.
- Liaise with other City Departments, Federal & Provincial authorities, Conservation & Regional authorities, and other outside agencies as required.
- Provide information and consultative services to all City Departments, Ward Councillors and residents as required.
- Assist in establishing technical and professional standards for the Development & Design Division and support the preparation of departmental and divisional reports, studies, and policy and procedure documents.
- Prepare minutes and reports relative to projects.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- University degree in Landscape Architecture from a recognized post‑secondary institution, or an approved equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Eligibility or full membership in the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects is preferred.
- Upto 3 years of progressively responsible Landscape Architecture and Urban Design experience, preferably including related experience in Municipal government.
- Ability to read and interpret landscape architectural and engineering drawings, plans and specifications including grading/drainage design.
- Knowledge of Planning Act, City By-laws, Ontario Building Code, landscape design, construction and maintenance procedures; arboricultural practices; advanced tree/plant identification.
- Ability to review, comment and implement corrective measures through project review and construction to ensure correctness and compliance with approvals and established City standards.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to bring forward creative results through project reviews and during site inspections.
- Ability to complete multiple projects within prescribed deadlines and be accountable for results.
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment, with other professionals, consultants, contractors local authorities, higher order government agencies, and the general public.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal), research, report writing and graphic communication skills.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of MS Office, Photoshop, Publisher, SketchUp and AutoCAD.
- Experience with ePlans, SAP and MAX is preferred.
- Must be pro-active, self-directed and highly organized.
- Valid Ontario drivers license. Must have ability to travel to sites and provide own transportation
- May be required to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 91,701.00 - $ 122,268.00
