Forestry Temporary Staff (Invasive Species)

Job Summary

This position will apply management techniques for the control of invasive species (flora and fauna), evaluate the effects of management techniques, and monitors invasive species occurrences on City of Mississauga property. This role will assist with botanical surveys and vegetation/habitat monitoring projects, community restoration/tree planting/stewardship projects, and public education regarding invasive species. 

Employment Period: Monday March 1, 2021 to Friday November 26, 2021

Hours of work : Monday to Friday  -  7.00 AM -  3.30 PM with ocassional evenings and weekend shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • • Evaluates management techniques for the control of invasive species and prioritizes treatment areas for upcoming season on City of Mississauga land.
    • Undertakes field-based invasive species removal and control activities.
    • Working in coordination with the Supervisor of Woodlands & Natural Areas, generates and implements invasive species management plans for woodlands and natural areas within the City.
    • Coordinates with qualified contractors and/or Natural Areas Technicians for the herbicide control of select species.
    • Works with community groups on invasive species monitoring or management projects.
    • Monitors invasive species occurrences within the City using GPS equipment.
    • Performs data entry, analysis and interpretation of projects.
    • Provides input on annual report. Writes other reports related to projects.
    • Assists with monitoring, management and research projects associated with key invasive insect species within the City such as Emerald Ash Borer and Gypsy Moth.
    • Assists with other botanical surveys and habitat monitoring; including, but not limited to invasive species and rare plants.
    • Work with Natural Areas Technicians to run community events, as well as other community outreach and education programs regarding invasive species monitoring and management projects within the City of Mississauga.
    • Maintains all equipment to ensure they are in proper working order.

    Successful applicants will be expected to fill positions and complete responsibilities that meet the operational needs of the business units, which require:
    • Working various shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays
    • Flexibility over the course of the work term as you can be assigned a variety of job responsibilities on a day-to-day basis.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    • Working outdoors during all seasons and weather conditions
    • Exposure to vibration, unpleasant smells, fumes, and dust
    • Exposure to grass, weeds, and other potential outdoor allergens, and various insects
    • Requires bending, lifting heavy equipment and objects (up to 55 lbs), climbing, walking, pushing, sitting, standing and repetitive motion

    Successful applicants will be required to attend various training sessions throughout the season.

Skills and Qualifications

  • • Degree and/or Diploma in Ecology, Natural Resources, Forestry or related field required.
    • Minimum two (2) years related field experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
    • Knowledge of botany/plant sciences, ecology, biology or natural sciences with prior field experience and knowledge of regional flora preferred.
    • Proficient floral identification skills preferred.
    • Knowledge of invasive plants and pests preferred.
    • Ability to analyze, manipulate, and interpret data and to coordinate information from multiple sources into databases including data entry, map creation and report production.
    • Ability to manage and prioritize task from multiple sources and complete them independently within assigned timeframes.
    • Ability to communicate clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means.
    • Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively.
    • Ability to safely operate and haul equipment such as UTVs. Familiarity with a variety of electrical and fuel powered tools and must be able to operate these tools safely. Must follow safety guidelines and precautions specified for work and vehicle operation.
    • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers, Outlook, Google Earth). Knowledge of ArcGIS and Trimble/Garmin GPS units considered an asset.
    • Ability to perform moderately strenuous tasks outdoors, with the potential for rough terrain and adverse weather conditions.
    • Must hold and provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s License Class G minimum with a driving record that meets City standards (proof will be required at time of interview). Access to a personal vehicle is also necessary.
    • Understanding of applicable Health and Safety regulations and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
    • Must hold Emergency First Aid CPR "C" Certification (proof will be required at the time of interview).
    • Must possess Green Patch CSA approved safety boots, 6”-8” to cover ankle made of suede or leather material.
    • All applicants must be available to work the entire duration of the term, and 40 hours per week.
