Job Summary

Join the City of Mississauga in shaping a resilient and sustainable urban forest. As a Forestry Coordinator, you will help grow and expand the City’s urban forest by leading the planning and delivery of tree planting and establishment across streets, parks, and municipal properties.

This role focuses on shaping Mississauga’s future urban forest by directly supporting the development of tree planting strategies, related policies, studies, and projects. Leverage GIS technology to analyze, visualize, and inform priority planting areas

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the planning, procurement, scheduling and monitoring of contractors, consultants, services, personnel, equipment, supplies, and materials to ensure the most efficient and effective delivery of operational and capital programs relating to the urban forest. 
  • Coordinate all aspects of project lifecycle management, including initiation, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing projects.
  • Develop, prepare, and implement work plans, designs and/or studies for tree planting.
  • Provide functional guidance and training to team members.
  • Provide direction to contractors and consultants.
  • Provides coverage and backup for the supervisor.
  • Coordinate and administer the complete contract lifecycle, including preparation, procurement, execution, monitoring and closure. 
  • Prepare effective specifications for tree planting including analyzing bids and making recommendations.•Ensure contracts adhere to applicable legislation, regulations, policies, and requirements.
  • Ensure contractor performance aligns with contract specifications and service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Monitor contract budgets, coordinate invoicing, track expenditures and provide regular updates to leadership, identifying potential cost overruns or discrepancies.
  • Ensures the timely delivery of quality customer service and resolutions to service requests, complaints, and inquiries from the public, elected officials, or other City staff. 
  • Develops, prepares, and submits correspondence, reports, briefing notes, memoranda, and presentations for leadership.
  • Cultivates effective working relationships with internal and external partners, including members of Council and their staff, other departments, divisions, and sections, and members of the public.
  • Represents the Division at public meetings, committees of Council, inter-divisional, and inter-departmental meetings.
  • Participates and/or contributes to working groups, committees, task forces, and project teams.
  • Develops and fosters a strong culture of health and safety and ensures compliance with all applicable health and safety legislation and policies (i.e. Occupational Health and Safety Act).
  • Ensures quality of work and services meets legislated, corporate, departmental, divisional, and section standards.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in urban forestry, forestry, arboriculture, or related discipline
  • Must be an ISA Certified Arborist.
  • Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ), ISA Certified Arborist Municipal Specialist or ISA Board Certified Master Arborist would be an asset.
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in urban forestry.
  • Knowledge of urban forestry, arboriculture, and landscape construction principles and practices.
  • Experience with tree planting and establishment on streets, parks, and City property, on hardscape and softscape.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing projects and contractors, including developing procurement documents, budget control, meeting deadlines and deliverables, contractor quality control, working with/on project teams and working groups.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with residents, stakeholders and elected officials effectively.
  • Sound knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations, and policies (i.e. Occupational Health and Safety Act).
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends and participate in the Forestry On Call program.
  • Must hold a valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License or higher with an acceptable driving record.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 43.19 - $ 57.59
