Job Summary

Effectively plan and lead a group exercise format, specific to the outline provided.  The key result is for all participants to feel successful and positive, realizing value for time and quality in the product and experience. Lead, coach, provide guidance and motivation with the goal of the program to be safe, fun and effective.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create a safe and effective class plan specific to the format outlined using sound training principles. 
  • Include exercises and modifications that provide a variety of options for comfort and intensity to ensure that all participants feel safe and successful.
  • Plan and prepares music appropriate for the class format and the participants’ needs and preferences. 
  • Present and instruct the group exercise format specific to the outline provided. 
  • Provide verbal, visual and kinesthetic cueing for exercises and technique to appeal to a variety of learning styles. 
  • Provide permission and options with verbal and/or visual demonstrations of options and modifications for exercises for comfort and to vary intensity.
  • Provide a combination of education and motivation appropriate to the format and participant group.
  • Engages with other staff with a positive and cooperative approach to best utilize facilities, space and serve participants. 
  • Support objectives and goals of all fitness programs through quality instruction, supervision and excellent customer and staff relations.
  • Conducts themselves inside and outside of the class in a positive and professional manner that is consistent with the City of Mississauga.
  • Promote other classes and programs to encourage and inform participants. 
  • Effectively provide quality customer service and act as a knowledgeable resource to participants
  • Respond to customer needs and questions with accurate information and/or guidance to resources being responsible and acting within scope of knowledge and service.
  • Reaches out to the Supervisor or Manager on duty when questions are beyond scope of service and specific to the facility and/or City of Mississauga programs and services.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience teaching multi-level group exercise classes with a variety of formats.
  • Group Exercise Certification by a recognized association including Can Fit Pro, ACE, OFC or equivalent with annual renewals provided for validation.
  • High Five Certification.
  • Emergency First Aid/CPR “B” Certification.
  • Physical exercises while instructing.
  • Primarily community centre environment.
  • A Level 3 – Vulnerable Check will be required of the successful candidate, as a condition of employment, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $33.06 - $37.78 
Hours of Work: up to 24 hours 
Work Location: Various Community Centre locations throughout Mississauga
Department/Division/Section: CMS/Community Services Dept , CMS/Recreation Division , Aquatics, Therapeutic & Fitness 
Non-Union/Union: Non Union
