MFES is an all hazards fire department that responds to all types of emergencies including high risk, water/ice rescue, confined space, hazardous materials to name a few. There is also the opportunity to meet the community to help with public education events and provide our fire and life safety messaging. MFES has more than 800 staff working across our four sections serving the community around the clock, to make this City a safe place. Duties and Responsibilities
Here's What You Get To Do:
- Provide exceptional customer service as a respected member of the community.
- Respond to all emergencies when called upon including, but not limited to:
- Medical – provide patient care, administer medical aid, CPR, defibrillation, symptom assist.
- Firefighting – deploy hose lines, operate firefighting equipment, use hand and power tools, operating emergency vehicles and pump operations.
- Rescue – search and rescue, remove injured persons from dangerous environments.
- Special Operations – vehicle rescue, hazardous materials response, water and ice rescue, rope rescue, elevator rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, machine rescue.
- Apparatus and station maintenance.
- Public Education – participate in the delivery of education programs and attend public events to promote fire safety awareness and responsibilities.
- Fire Prevention – assess all buildings for compliance with fire and life safety requirements, conduct preplans, familiarization and tactical site assessments.
- Provide assistance in a vast array of non-emergency situations.
- Participate in continuous training and learning to advance your knowledge and skill.
- Work in accordance with the provisions of all applicable laws and regulations and all City of Mississauga corporate and departmental policies and procedures.
Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum of 18 years of age or older at time of application.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent. This position requires applicants with international credentials to provide a recognized credential evaluation report as part of the application process.

- Possess a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter I & II certification is required (must have proof of Pro Board or IFSAC).
- Must possess either NFPA 472 or NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certification (including Mission Specific PPE and Mission Specific Product Control) certification (proof of Pro Board or IFSAC required)
- Please note that successful completion of NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II certification is required prior to the date of application submission. Your NFPA certification must be secured from a post-secondary institution, in Ontario, with either IFSAC or ProBoard seal, that is accredited as recognized by the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM), Ontario, Canada. Education and certification acquired outside of Ontario must be accredited by either IFSAC or ProBoard and recognized by the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM). If you are invited for the next steps of the assessment, you will be required to produce a letter from the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM), stating that your out of province certification is recognized in Ontario.
- Possess a valid and current Standard First Aid and CPR "C" certification, CPR BLS/HCP certificate or higher (e.g. EMR).
- Possess a valid and unrestricted Ontario Class “D” driver’s license with a “Z” endorsement or equivalent (deemed equivalent by Ontario Ministry of Transportation), and a driving record that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga.
- Provide a Level 3 (Vulnerable Sector Screening) that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga.
- Successful completion of, but not limited to, a written test, behaviour / competency based interviews, a medical assessment, practical assessments, behavioural assessments, York University Firefighter fitness assessment (scheduled by the City of Mississauga), other cognitive assessments as required, swim assessment and reference and background checks. Some assessments will be at the candidate’s expense.
- Effective English communication skills and ability to communicate clearly and precisely in multiple situations.
Skills and Qualification Continued
Physical Requirements
- Excellent hearing ability without the use of hearing aids.
- Ability to swim proficiently (must pass the swim assessment).
- Candidates must meet the vision requirements of NFPA 1582 which includes visual acuity, colour vision, binocular vision, peripheral vision and ocular health. Uncorrected vision acuity of 20/30 in each eye.
- Sufficient colour perception to safely perform all essential job tasks (NFPA 1582). Individuals with abnormal colour perceptions i.e; red, green deficiency may meet the colour vision requirement. Individuals with monochromatic do not meet the standard.
- Ability to handle intense and sustained physical effort necessary to safely perform firefighting duties.
- Willingness to work 24-hour shifts on a rotating basis (including weekends, holidays etc.).
Customer Service

Assets
- College diploma or university degree in any discipline recognized by an accredited association, organization or institution.
- Trade apprenticeship certification or minimum of one year experience in skilled trades in any discipline recognized as a skilled trade in Ontario.
- Previous experience of minimum one year as a volunteer, part-time or full-time firefighter.
- Previous experience of minimum one year in emergency services other than fire, operating large vehicle and/or heavy vehicle / machinery operation, fire prevention, military or coast guard.
- Previous experience of minimum one year as an elevator technician, fire alarm technician and/or life safety technician.
- Possess National Lifeguard Services (NLS) certification.
- Fluent in a second language other than English and French.
- Occupational Health and Safety related training and certification (e.g. JHSC part 1 and 2).
- Ski patrol or Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification.
- Experience in customer service and/or public service roles.
- Experience competing at the Provincial, National or Professional level as an athlete.
- Volunteer, humanitarian and/or community involvement experience of minimum one year (e.g. habitat for humanity, global medic, global fire or firefighters without borders).
- Previous experience or training in technical rescue ( water, ice, trench, rope rescue, confined space rescue covered under NFPA 1006).
- HAZMAT removal or private disaster management (i.e.; chemical spills, environmental clean-up, mould, asbestos, bio hazard, contamination clean up).
Recruitment Process
A non-refundable administration fee of $150 +tax is required for ALL external candidates applying to the Firefighter position. Payment is required prior to application submission. Hourly Rate/Salary: $65,416.00 - $ 109,026.06
