Fire Communications Operator

Job Summary
Under the supervision of an on duty Communications Officer, the successful candidate will answer 911 and other calls for emergency assistance.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Receive fire alarms, operate telephone and computerized dispatch equipment;
  • Maintain radio contact with fire service vehicles, both at emergencies and other departmental activities;
  • Perform system tests, record activities and perform related communications functions as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Shift work is required involving evening/night shift (5pm - 7am), day shift (7am - 5pm), weekends and holidays.
Skills and Qualifications

You must be able to deal effectively with the public in stressful situations in a fast-paced emergency response environment. 

  • In addition to  demonstrating  clear English communication and comprehension skills, your qualifications include:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent 
  • Graduation from an accredited post-secondary Emergency Services Dispatch program is a definite asset.
  • Emergency communications experience and/or related post secondary education are definite assets;
  • Proven keyboarding skills of a minimum 40 wpm, with a high degree of accuracy;
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Completion of APCO "Public Safety Telecommunicator 1, 7th Ed., Canada" course or completion of NFPA 1061, are definite assets;
  • A Criminal Record Search will be required of the successful candidate, their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.

 

*Please note that we are hiring for a permanent position, however this position is subject to layoff as per collective agreement.
