Digital Service Squad- Team Members, Digital Main Street Initiative

Job Summary

The Economic Development Office is currently seeking outgoing, enthusiastic, qualified candidates for the position of Digital Service Squad(DSS) – Team Member. This is a unique opportunity to support the growth of one of the province's most innovative economic development programs.


Reporting to the Manager, Small Business, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, the successful candidates will be key contributor to delivering one-on-one support to local ‘bricks-and-mortar’ small businesses in Mississauga with the adoption of digital tools and technologies to help small business owners build their online brand to promote, sell, and grow and manage their business more effectively.
Local health conditions allowing, the DSS Members will be assigned to specific commercial areas and/or Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) in Mississauga and will be required to independently travel to and visit/service local businesses. Otherwise, particularly under COVID-19 conditions, the DSS Member will be assigned to work remotely with local businesses.

Due to Covid-19, most of our offices are currently closed to protect the health and safety of our employees, clients and community. As such, this position will be required to work remotely for an undetermined period. Once our offices re-open you will report to 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga, L5B 3J1 at Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre (MBEC).


This is an up to 5 month contract at 25-30 hours per week.  

Duties and Responsibilities

On-boarding Assistance

  • Conduct pre-business visit research to best understand the assigned BIA/neighborhood and businesses.
  • Set-up appointments and/or go door-to-door to onboard brick-and-mortar small businesses (i.e., no home-based businesses) to introduce the Digital Main Street program and on-board the business onto the Digital Main Street platform with support of BIAs’ staff, as needed.
  • Walk-through the on-boarding survey with the business owner and use appreciative inquiry methods to best understand their business goals and how digital tools/technology can assist them in meeting their goals. 
  • Assist the business in staying in touch with Digital Main Street by subscribing to the e-newsletter and social channels.

 Advisory Services

  • Participate in Digital Service Squad and program training from Digital Main Street corporate partners prior to in-field deployment.
  • Once the business has been on-boarded to the Digital Main Street platform, the DSS Member will walk through the Digital Assessment and recommendations with the business owner. 
  • DSS Members will assist the business owner in identifying their first priorities and the first digital tools/technology they want to activate. 
  • DSS Members will also review vendor recommendations made through the platform and lead the business owner to relevant deals/discounts on the platform. 
  • DSS Members may also be asked to plan, develop and deliver presentations through webinars, as required, on various digital marketing subject matter to inform and educate small business owners.

Activation/Implementation Services

  • DSS Members will activate and implement free, easy-to-use digital tools and technologies that businesses would like to use (i.e., building a basic website, activating social media accounts, etc.). 
  • DSS Members may also provide some resources (articles, links, how-to guides, webinars) available through the Mississauga Business Entrepreneur Centre and secondary sources that can help the business owner learn more about a particular tool that has been activated, or subject matter of interest.  

Reporting and Feedback

  • DSS Members must complete their field notes and report on a weekly basis to the Digital Service Squad Team Lead and Program Supervisor.
  • DSS Members must attend team meetings as set out by the Digital Service Squad Team Lead and Program Supervisor.
  • DSS Members must ensure ALL DATA is accurately and completely entered within the Digital Main Street CRM (HubSpot) after each business interaction or on a daily basis.

Special Projects

  • DSS Members will be responsible for leading the implementation of special projects and/or community-wide initiatives (i.e. Google 360 photography).
  • DSS Members will work with their DSS Team Lead to ensure successful activation of initiatives and increased Digital Main Street engagement.
  • DSS Members will be available to help business owners develop their Digital Transformation Plan needed to apply for the Digital Transformation Grant, and can subsequently help to implement the plan if approved for the Grant.

Social Media Development

  • Working under the lead of the DSS Team Lead, team members will be responsible for assisting in the growth of all DMS social media channels, as well as curating content and photos to be used accordingly.
  • This includes, but is not limited to: curating multiple social media posts every week, coming up with new ways to engage our audience on social, and helping with social media development at DMS events as needed.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Possess strong customer service skills;
  • Have experience in a sales role and/or marketing environment;
  • Possess strong communication and presentation skills in English (written and verbal);
  • Possess strong interpersonal and relationship building/relationship management skills;
  • Possess excellent organizational and time management skills;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Self-motivated, proactive and enthusiastic;
  • Be familiar with digital technologies for small business (e.g.: website, social media, e-commerce, analytics, etc.);
  • Be able to use basic software and collaboration tools such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and online communication and collaboration tools such as Slack, Webex, MS Teams, etc;
  • Be able to travel, and work remotely and independently with small businesses in Mississauga;
  • Previous experience with online and offline marketing is considered a strong asset;
  • Previous experience working with small businesses is considered an asset;
  • Fluency in other languages is considered an asset;
  • A Level 2- Criminal or Judicial Matters Check (previously Regular CRS) will be required of the successful candidate, as a condition of employment, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.

DSS Members will receive training on the program and from the corporate partners prior to in-field deployment.
DSS Members may be required to attend workshops and events related to Digital Main Street. 
Local health conditions allowing, the majority of time spent will be in the field working with businesses, however, technical and PPE equipment will be available for use during the term of the Team Member’s assignment.
