Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Community & Neighbourhood Development, the Community Development Coordinator, Recreation initiates and maintains positive and effective relationships and networks with internal and external stakeholders to advance strategic priorities of the City of Mississauga Recreation Division and provides leadership for the development and implementation of policies, programs, and initiatives that keep Mississauga residents healthy, active and connected in partnership with the community.

Duties and Responsibilities

Initiate and maintain positive and effective relationships and networks with internal and external stakeholders and system partners to advance the strategic priorities of the City of Mississauga Recreation Division including the Older Adult Plan for Recreation (2019) and the Youth Plan for Recreation (2020): 

  • Act as a primary point of contact/liaison for community groups and other external stakeholders to navigate and access information and support from the City and other sources to keep Mississauga residents active, healthy and connected to their communities.
  • Facilitate relationships and collaboration between external organizations, community centre teams and other City departments.
  • Provide support for the administration of key policies and programs including the Community Group Registry Program and Community Grants
  • Provide leadership and support for the development of agreements with community groups
  • Work with facility teams to develop and implement communications, outreach and community engagement activities
  • Conduct environmental scans, needs assessments and other activities to inform program/service development and continuous improvement
  • Design and develop capacity building and networking opportunities for staff, volunteers and stakeholders 

Provide leadership and facilitate effective teamwork to advance division, city and sector priorities:

  • ​​​Provide leadership for project teams including peers, part time staff and volunteers
  • Develop, implement and monitor project plans and budgets and manage expenditures
  • Prepare and coordinate project charters, meeting agendas and minutes
  • Prepare briefing notes, corporate reports and other communications
  • Provide leadership and support for the devleopment of grants and funding applications and reports
  • Act as a liaison for the City/Recreation Division on key internal and external networks, committees, and work teams​​​​​​

​​​​​​​Other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

  • University or college degree with a focus on community development, recreation, sport or leisure studies or related field.
  • Specialized training in areas including community engagement (e.g. IAP2), facilitation and project management is an asset.
  • 3-5 years of progressive experience working for a municipality, government agency or organization that has worked closely with municipal government
  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse community stakeholders and priority populations including youth, older adults and newcomers.
  • HIGH FIVE ® Principles of Healthy Child Development.
  • Microsoft Office programs and applicable City software.  Experience working with Survey Monkey and Share Point is an asset.
  • Irregular hours of work to accommodate work with community stakeholders.  Occasional long days working special events, standing for the day.  Availability to work evenings and weekends is required.
  • Regular sensory listening skills.
  • Requires flexibility of work locations including the ability to work effectively from home and/or community locations across the City (e.g. community centres, parks) in all weather conditions.
