Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Community & Neighbourhood Development and with guidance from Community Development Coordinators, the Community Development Assistant will support the successful delivery of community development initiatives for the Recreation & Culture Division. A primary responsibility of this temporary contract position will be to work with older adult community groups and volunteers to promote and facilitate the use of outdoor amenities such as parks, trails, picnic areas and outdoor fitness equipment to keep residents active, healthy and connected to the community.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Build relationships with and assist older adult community groups to plan and implement recreation opportunities for residents at city amenities including parks, trails, picnic areas and outdoor fitness equipment. This will include attendance on site outdoors at various city locations including parks, trails, picnic areas, outdoor fitness areas while activities are taking place to provide coaching and support as needed.
- Assist with the development and delivery of communication and resource materials.
- Coordinate and assist with community outreach activities (e.g. promote City programs and services at community events).
- Administer research and program evaluation activities such as benchmarking, program tracking, participant surveys, data analysis and reporting.
- Coordinate and assist with project management and administration for community development initiatives including coordinating meetings, updating project management tools, program schedules and project reporting.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- Current student or graduate of a post-secondary degree or diploma related to community development, recreation, sport or leisure studies, fitness or related field along with a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience.
- Knowledge and experience with planning and implementation of recreation programs and events.
- Strong analytical skills for developing and maintaining project management tools and supporting research and program evaluation activities.
- Excellent customer service, oral and written communication skills.
- Strong administration, organizational and problem solving skills. Ability to coordinate information from multiple sources into databases including data entry and report production.
- Specialized experience or training in areas related to physical activity for older adults, project management, community engagement and marketing would be considered an asset.
- Ability to work in a fast pace and changing environment. Proficient computer skills including Microsoft office.
- Experience with City software including Active Net, Share Point, Survey Monkey and Better impact is considered an asset.

- Current CPR/Standard First Aid Certification.
- Must be available to work flexible hours. Shifts will be scheduled including weekends, evenings and holidays with notice to accommodate the activities of external community groups.
- Requires flexibility of work locations including the ability to work from home, office and other locations across the city including community centres, parks, trails, outdoor fitness areas as required by the program schedule.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $33.36 - $44.48
