Job Summary

The City of Mississauga is seeking a detail-oriented and research-driven student to support its Strategic Communications and Initiatives team in enhancing the inclusivity and accessibility of City communications. This role involves conducting an environmental scan of leading North American municipalities to identify best practices in equity-focused communication. The successful candidate will develop two foundational documents: an inclusive content and accessibility standards guideline and a City house-style guide, both of which will help ensure that all City communications reflect Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles, meet plain language standards, and adhere to accessibility requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

•    Conduct a comprehensive environmental scan of major North American cities to identify best practices in inclusive and accessible communications.
•    Research and gather municipal guidelines related to EDI, plain language, and accessibility in public communications.
•    Draft, revise, and finalize: 
        • An Inclusive Content and Accessibility Standards Guideline for use by the Strategic Communications and Initiatives team.
        • A City House-Style Guide with examples that reflect the City’s writing style and tone and considers EDI, plain language and accessibility principles.
•    Provide strategic recommendations for the rollout and adoption of these documents across City departments.
•    Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure alignment with existing City policies and values.

Skills and Qualifications

•    Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary education or master's program in business management, communications, public relations or a related field.
•    Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to distill information from multiple sources.
•    Excellent written communication skills, with attention to clarity, tone, and inclusivity.
•    Familiarity with principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, plain language writing, and accessibility standards.
•    Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional environment.
•    Experience with communications, public policy, or related fields is an asset.

Hourly Rate/Salary: 19.80 - 23.53
Hours of Work: 3 days a week (7 hours a day) 
Work Location: Civic Centre - 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga
Work Model : This is an on-site role requiring presence in the office three days per week
