Co-Op Student - Zoning Technician

Job Summary

The City of Mississauga is committed to fostering future talent while managing core operational needs. This co-op opportunity offers a chance for students to gain hands-on experience in a professional environment, directly supporting our team with key administrative and application support tasks.


Reporting to the Manager of Zoning the successful candidate will assist our team in various operational and administrative tasks starting with review of architectural plans and documentation for pre-screening review purposes, updating parking records, and other support functions. This progressive role will enable the student to work alongside experienced professionals in the Planning and Building Department and interact with Committee of Adjustment. As well as interact with Licensing, Enforcement and other departments to gain a comprehensive understanding of day-to-day operations in a municipal environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

       Application Pre-Screening and Review

  • Conduct preliminary reviews of applications for various programs or services.
  • Check for completeness, required documentation, and initial eligibility.
  • Assist with the tracking and updating of data in our internal applications.

    Data Management
  • Update and maintain parking and other records, including issuing new permits, updating status changes, and troubleshooting basic issues.
  • Work with City software to ensure records are accurate and up to date.

    Administrative Support
  • Provide general support to the operations team with data entry, document management/creation, and other clerical tasks.
  • Assist with preparing reports and summaries as needed.
  • Organize and maintain files, both digital and hard copy, for easy retrieval by the team.

    Customer Service Assistance
  • Respond to basic inquiries from internal and external stakeholders regarding application statuses, projects and parking information.
  • Redirect more complex inquiries to appropriate team members.

    Project Support
  • Participate in team meetings 
  • Contribute to ad-hoc projects/initiatives within the department/unit 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams as required

Skills and Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a registered co-op program at a Canadian post-secondary institution, and eligible for a Work Term during the specified period 
  • Working knowledge of e-plans or other computer assisted drafting (CAD) software is an asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret surveys and architectural drawings 
  • Ability to read and interpret by-laws, applicable legislation, agreements, regulations and other documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and manage high volume workload to complete assigned duties accurately and within timelines.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to deal effectively with the public.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and conflict management skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously or within a group or team environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Hourly Rate/Salary: 19.80 - 23.53
