Job Summary
As a Traffic Operations Co-op Student, you will play a key role in supporting the daily functions of the Traffic Operations. Working closely with the Supervisor or designate, you will gain hands-on experience in traffic studies, field investigations, and public engagement—making a meaningful contribution to safer and more efficient roadways.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Supervisor, Traffic Operations or designate, the successful candidate will perform the following:
- Assist in the day-to-day operations and carry out various traffic functions of the Traffic Operations and Road Safety Units;
- Perform regular peak hour studies and observations;
- Conduct basic field work and provide comments to members of staff;
- Investigate and complete record keeping requirements related to sign deficiencies;
- Provide both written and verbal feedback to staff and the general public related to traffic operations;
- Perform other duties as required;
- Duties and responsibilities will vary according to the student’s academic background and experience;
- In addition to field work requirements, office space will be available for use in common areas throughout the city facilities
- Electronic equipment will be provided to facilitate the need to work remotely
Skills and Qualifications
- Must be enrolled in a Post Secondary Transportation Engineering or related program;
- Previous co-op experience related to “Transportation Engineering Technology” would be an asset;
- Demonstrate knowledge of various traffic studies, such as turning movement counts, stopping compliance and spot speed studies;
- Knowledge in traffic engineering theory and practice is required;
- Knowledge of computer applications such as MS Office, Outlook and other traffic related software;
- Exceptional customer service skills;
- Strong verbal and written communication skill are essential;
- Demonstrated ability to plan and organize work is crucial;
- Must possess a valid Class “G” driver’s license and have access to a vehicle on a daily basis. Use of own vehicle will be compensated for monthly at an established (per km) rate.
Hourly Rate/Salary: 19.80 - 23.53
