Job Summary

This position is within the City Planning Strategies Division of the City of Mississauga, Planning and Building Department.  The City Planning Strategies Division is responsible for the City's long-range land use planning and the maintenance of databases supporting this function. 

Successful candidates will assist with the City's annual business and employment survey. Mississauga has been conducting this survey since 2001. The data collected helps us support Planning and Building Department studies and initiatives; monitor economic conditions and employment across the city; forecast and plan for the provision of infrastructure, services and programs; understand long term economic trends; builds connections with local businesses and the creation of the Business Directory; and provide employment information to many of City’s departments and external organizations.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate(s) will be representing the City of Mississauga performing the following functions:

  • Assist with the annual employment survey - a survey of over 28,000 businesses
  • Conduct face to face and telephone surveys to acquire employment and business information
  • Perform daily in-person field verifications using ESRI Field Maps
  • Assist with e-mail/online questionnaires and updating the employment databases
  • May support the development and implementation of land use policies and programs, and may assist in the preparation of informative materials for use by internal and external stakeholders
  • May perform analysis work to identify trends and conduct research on relevant issues using a variety of research methodologies and consolidate information
  • Participate in divisional meetings and attend Planning and Development Committee and Council meetings in order to gain an understanding of the municipal planning function
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled at a University co-op program in urban planning/studies, geography, environmental planning, or a related field is required. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of municipal government, including the role of Council and municipal relationship with the regional, provincial and federal levels of government. 
  • May require knowledge of policy planning, research, analysis, and economic development. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, ESRI ArcGIS, and Google Earth would be an asset.
  • Excellent communications and customer service skills.
  • Strong computer skills with data entry and large databases.
  • Light lifting of supplies. Exposure to computer/iPad screens.
  • Experience working in a team environment is required.
  • Primarily field work environment with some office component. 
  • Position requires access to a personal car, minimum class "G" or "G2" driver's licence and driving record that is acceptable to the City.
  • Position requires conducting in-person visits within the City of Mississauga, Monday to Friday, generally during the office hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
  • Be available, full-time, during the Summer employment period: May 4, 2026 – August 21, 2026.
  • Students must upload proof of enrolment in a co-op program when completing your application.

Hourly Rate/Salary: 19.80 - 23.53
