Assistant, Community Development

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Programs and Partnerships, the successful candidate will be responsible for working to support the successful implementation of assigned Parks Community Stewardship programs throughout various community/neighbourhood initiatives with community groups and volunteers across the City.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Supervisor, Programs and Partnerships, the Assistant, Community Development is responsible for the full delivery and maintenance of assigned Parks Community Stewardship and Outreach programs within budget
  • Coordinates and builds strong community stewardship programs between the City and the community through educational activities with local schools, businesses, and community groups
  • Supports the Supervisor, Programs and Partnerships to develop and maintain various project management tools (e.g. work breakdown schedule, share point sites)
  • Maintains accurate project databases, support research and information gathering activities related to key initiatives (e.g. benchmarking, surveys, data analysis)
  • Support planning and implementation of workshops and meetings with external groups
  • Facilitate compliance with City processes and requirements
  • Acts as first point of contact through Mississauga 311 and Better Impact volunteer management software, providing on-going customer service with residents and volunteers through telephone and email.
  • Implement problem-solving skills to resolve issues as required
  • Build strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support joint initiatives and partnerships, including community groups, ward offices, City departments, school boards and provincial agencies.
  • Coordinates leads and supports City staff and/or volunteers with the execution of community stewardship programs ensuring the health and safety of all participants
  • Review and develop application and training materials for all volunteer programs, including screening requirements, criteria and operational standards.
  • Ensure all activities follow city or organizational policies, standard operating procedures, by-laws, safety protocols, and relevant regulations and strategies.
  • Coordinate and assist with community outreach activities (e.g. promote City programs and services at community events), including purchasing and inventory management of outreach materials and program supplies.
  • Support creative projects as required by the other City Divisions/Departments where the Assistant, Community Development is asked to assist
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

  • Post - secondary degree or diploma with a focus on community development, recreation, public administration, park operations, or related field
  • Three (3) years’ relevant work experience in volunteer management, community stewardship or community development projects
  • Knowledge and experience with planning and implementation of programs and events.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with local agencies, community groups, and volunteers
  • Ability to coordinate information from multiple sources into databases including data entry and report production
  • Ability to complete tasks independently within assigned timeframes
  • Excellent customer service, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform administrative duties emphasizing detail-oriented and numerical tasks
  • Working knowledge of software applications ( e.g.; MS Office Word, Excel, Power point, Web browsers, Outlook,)
  • Strong analytical skills for developing and maintaining budgets and project schedules
  • Knowledge of group dynamics and team building with advanced communication, customer service, and presentation skills
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license required
  • Ability to operate a commercial vehicle and trailer
  • Demonstrated professionalism, courtesy and effectiveness in dealing with all levels of City Staff
  • Understanding of applicable Health and Safety regulations and Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Must hold Emergency First Aid Certification (proof will be required at the time of the interview)
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required
