Job Summary

As a Researcher in the City Planning Strategies Division you will be part of a team of engaging, enthusiastic and dedicated people that are committed to reviewing and updating the official plan to ensure that the physical change of the Mississauga is executed and aligned with Provincial and Regional policies, Council strategic priorities and community aspirations. Collectively, all of our staff plays an important role in influencing the City’s cultural vibrancy, economic prosperity, social well-being, environmental resiliency, built form, and overall financial sustainability. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Manager, Official Plan Review the Researcher will work collaboratively to provide research and analysis, community engagement and other planning support to the official plan review team. Specifically the Researcher will assist with the preparation, presentation and implementation of planning studies, strategies and reports and related community engagement activities. The Researcher will:

  • design and conduct research and analysis on planning and related projects;
  • produce written, graphic and statistical reports in support of the team’s objectives;
  • prepare presentation material and related documents including information and content for the project website;
  • ensure that all research and  information is gathered and disseminated consistently and  in a timely manner;
  • provide information for public and stakeholder interests in response to requests;
  • participate in the development of new research initiatives;
  • provide support to the official plan review team as required;
  • conduct and manage minor planning studies and projects as assigned;
  • assist with the design and delivery of community engagement initiatives including website format and content and face-to-face meetings, serve as a key member of the project team taking direction from the Manager, Official Plan Review on research initiatives and perform administrative tasks as needed  by the project team;
  • provide logistic and production support for stakeholders and public engagement including surveys, focus groups and presentations;
  • provide support for ad hoc information requests;
  • liaise with City and Regional Departments and other agencies involved in the official plan review;
  • perform other duties, as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • University degree in urban or regional planning, or related degree or relevant combination of experience and degree; 
  • One to five years experience producing research reports, discussion papers and conducting detailed research, benchmarking and trend analysis;
  • Excellent research, analytical and graphic skills;
  • Knowledge of data administration principles, trending and benchmarking;
  • Ability to collect and maintain sensitive information with confidentiality;
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate both verbally (e.g. public presentations) and in writing, to all levels of the Corporation including elected officials, the media and the public;
  • Excellent customer service, report writing and presentation skills;
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills;
  • Ability to work effectively independently and on teams;
  • Experience managing projects of medium complexity is preferred;
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment requiring collaboration, commitment and creativity along with ease in working with consultants, staff, senior levels of leadership, the community and elected officials;
  • Ability to attend off-site meetings and perform site checks is required;
  • Must be results oriented with an ability to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment;
  • Experience coordinating logistics for special events, presentations and tours;
  • Demonstrated experience working with Microsoft PowerPoint, Project, Adobe Acrobat Sketch-Up, PowerPoint and Access is preferred;
  • Membership or eligibility for membership with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute and/or Canadian Institute of Planners is considered an asset
