 *Employment period is from April 1, 2019 up to October 18, 2019, based on a 40 hour work week, and includes evenings, weekends, holidays and shift work.

Duties and Responsibilities

Parks Seasonal Operations Staff are responsible for the delivery of Parks Operations maintenance functions, including the operation of vehicles and small equipment/machinery, routine and specialized maintenance and provide leadership and guidance to Summer Students as required. 

 

The successful incumbent may be assigned to any of the following responsibilities:

 

  • Turf maintenance, including mowing, trimming, aeration, fertilization and fall renovation activities and lead turf crews where applicable.
  • Planting, weeding and maintenance of annual and perennial beds, shrubs and other horticultural displays.
  • Litter picking and garbage/recycling collection and disposal in parks City-wide.
  • Sports field maintenance including lining, gilling, turf cutting, fall renovations and various amenity repairs to City sports field assets.
  • Cemetery maintenance including maintenance of horticultural displays, turf cutting, grounds maintenance and assistance with internments.
  • Assist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair of park amenities such as playgrounds, splash pads and picnic shelters, provide assistance for the delivery, set up, takedown, clean-up and ongoing support for community and special events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Previous experience in turf or sports field maintenance, horticulture, construction or other outdoor maintenance is preferred.
  • Formal education in turf or sports field maintenance, horticulture or other education relevant to the position would be an asset.
  • All applicants must be available to work the entire duration of the term, based on 40 hour work week including evenings, weekends, holidays and shift work.
  • Must hold and provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s License Class G minimum with a driving record that meets City standards (proof will be required at time of interview). Must be competent in operating a variety of vehicle sizes and types.
  • Will be assigned alternate duties, shifts or locations based on the operational needs.
  • Understanding of applicable Health and Safety regulations and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Must hold Emergency First Aid Certification (proof will be required at the time of interview).
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in varying climate conditions.
  • Must possess Green Patch CSA approved safety boots, 6”-8” to cover ankle made of suede or leather material.

 

  • Successful applicants will be expected to complete responsibilities that meet the operational needs of the business units, which will require:

  • Working various shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Flexibility over the course of the work term as can be re-deployed to various locations, shifts and/or assigned a variety of job responsibilities on a day-to-day basis.

 

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Working outdoors during all seasons and weather conditions
  • Exposure to vibration, unpleasant smells, fumes, dust, and flying particles
  • Exposure to grass, weeds, and other potential outdoor allergens, animal feces and various insects
  • Requires bending, lifting heavy equipment and objects (up to 55 lbs), climbing, walking, pushing, sitting, standing and repetitive motion

Successful applicants will be required to attend various training sessions throughout the season.
