Job Summary

The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of municipal law matters with a focus on commercial law. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Deputy City Solicitor, Municipal Law, the successful candidate wil:

  • Provide strategic legal advice and support to Council, senior management and City staff on various municipal, commercial, procurement and construction law matters
  • Draft and negotiate complex relationship and commercial agreements with other government and commercial entities
  • Responsible for ensuring that proper legal documents in respect of necessary by-laws, Council resolutions and reports are prepared
  • Performs other duties as assigned.   
Skills and Qualifications
  • Post-graduate university degree in law (LLB or JD) and member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario 
  • Minimum 5-7 years of varied progressive law experience including an emphasis on municipal and commercial law, with experience in procurement and construction law being an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing, and demonstrated to ability to work on teams
  • Demonstrated sound judgment, strong negotiating and drafting skills, and ability to provide strategic advice and direction to members of Council, senior management and City staff
  • Strong organizational skills and proven ability to work under tight deadlines and determine work priorities
  • Solid research skills and working knowledge of computer software, with experience working with paperless legal files being an asset


Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 111,033.00 - $ 158,105 
Hours of Work: 35 hours 
Work Location: Civic Centre
